Nine times Matthew uses the phrase, “It is written.” He references the Old Testament. Fourteen times Matthew writes of “that which was spoken”. 

There are 129 quotations or allusions from the Old Testament in the pages of Matthew’s Gospel. The first Gospel makes it clear that the Messiah of the Old Testament and the Jesus of the New Testament are one in the same.
